  • DRILLEYS ALPARGATA
  • The alpargata dates back several hundred years, and in fact can be traced back to the ancient Egyptian sandal. However, it was Spanish immigrants in Argentina in the early 1800S who introduced a lightweight canvas shoe that eventually became the alpargata.
  • Rural workers loved the comfort and versatility of the alpargata, but we can thank the gauchos – those lonely, mythical, nomadic characters - for spreading the popularity of the shoe. The gauchos roamed on foot and horseback, always wearing alpargatas.
  • Eventually the alpargata became a common every day shoe for many Argentinians, although anyone who valued a breathable and glove-like shoe will find the alpargata a perfect fit. Alpargatas were originally made only in black or white; now, Drilleys brings its own flavor and verve to this traditional shoe.
